We are a group of organisations and professionals from different EU countries with cumulatively over 100 years of experience in ethical banking, social and solidarity economy models and cooperatives.
We want
to create European Cooperative Society that will be creating and managing an European Ethical Bank based in Lithuania as a country with one of the most innovative and forward-thinking regulators in EU.
We
are closely collaborating with sister project to set up similar continental-wide bank in South America.
We want to create the first European Ethical Bank that would support:
a wide range of stakeholders in ethical and impact financing in acquiring the best possible technology and access to financial instruments in order to lower their cost of capital and transaction costs,
local community cooperatives and institutions in launching their own financial institutions and intermediaries and build local credit portfolios
fintech companies creating innovative IT solutions dedicated to financial inclusion to get compliancy support in their development and access to the market
depositors to transparently manage their funds in a bank that would support sustainable development and work actively to support and fund projects that are contributing to fulfilment of UN Social
Development Goals.
The global financial crisis put under spotlight all deficiencies and weaknesses of the global economic
model which was for decades focused only on short-term financial profitability. People demand more
transparency, decentralisation and democratic participation in management of their own funds and
resources. As society's expectations change, banks and financial institutions need to become transparent
and clear about how their operations and services create value for their customers, clients, investors as
well as for society in general.
Ethical banking takes that expectations to the very DNA of banking business and consequently to the core of the economical issues. Present ethical banking system that is logically embedded in local communities
cannot achieve necessary economy of scale to compete for new technologies and cost of capital.
Therefore it is needed to create larger-scale ethical banks that would serve as a shared service centres for
all different actors in the ecosystem of ethical and impact finance.
Those banks would also have a large role in the replication of the models to new geographic areas and
would be able to support existing entities with good practices, newest technologies and shared funding and collaboration mechanisms.
An ethical bank is a bank concerned with the social and environmental impacts of its investments and loans.
We expect to create agile, innovative and flexible European Ethical Bank that will leverage and
multiply invested capital by a factor of 10 in areas that are crucial for the development of ethical and sustainable economy:
We will also be able to support the development of new institutions in new geographies in EU and broader region.
